(Issues)

In the early 80's, the Thai economy faced with difficulties alongside other developing countries as a result of the second oil shock during 1979-1980. This was aggravated by the rising interest rates during 1972-1982 and the increased protectionism in the developed world. The macroeconomic situation deteriorated rapidly as the inflation increased to as high as 19.7 percent in 1980 with the current account deficit of 6.4 percent and 7.4 percent of GDP during 1980 and 1981 respectively.
