Considering the nature of Japanese society in the 21st Century, Japan must urgently tackle such important problems as ageing, the expansion of fiscal deficits, and the worsening of global environmental issues. In this context, it is a significant challenge to establish strategies that will lead the economy to a path of stable and sustainable growth without a decline in economic welfare. On these topics, a lot of researches have already been launched abroad, and it will be difficult for Japan to resolve those problems on its own.
Since the beginning of the 21st century, the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), Cabinet Office, government of Japan, has commenced the “International Collaboration Projects” to address these problems from various viewpoints; a number of research terms, both at home and abroad, will participate. Since April 2002, a total of 21 research groups have been carrying out two-year studies as part of the Projects. Research themes include the effective employment of IT, resolving fiscal and social security problems, and creative solutions regarding resources, energy, and the environment that will lead to sustainable economic growth.
