Considering the nature of Japanese society in the 21st century, Japan must urgently tackle such important problems as population aging, the expansion of fiscal deficits, and the worsening of global environmental issues. Since the beginning of this century, the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), Cabinet Office, government of Japan, has commenced the "International Collaboration Projects" to address these problems from various viewpoints; a number of research teams, both at home and abroad, will participate. Since April 2002, a total of 21 research groups have been carrying out two-year studies as part of the Projects. Research themes include the effective employment of information technology (IT), resolving fiscal and social security problems, and creative solutions regarding resources, energy, and the environment that will lead to sustainable economic growth.
The Meeting of International Collaboration Projects 2004 was recently held; it concentrated on selecting effective employment of IT and resolving fiscal and social security problems.
