"The Macroeconomic Frontier in the Wake of the Global Financial Crisis"

August 2010
Economic and Social Research Institute
Cabinet Office

The global financial crisis, which was triggered by the subprime mortgage problem that surfaced in 2007, also had a serious impact on real economies; in response, governments all over the world implemented large-scale macroeconomic policies. Amid this, debate has also heightened on the effectiveness of macroeconomic policies and on the best financial regulatory systems, and economies have undergone various new stimulus packages.
Under this backdrop, the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) has reexamined the ongoing global financial crisis within a framework of economics.
In addition to confirming the need for discussing policy responses from a wide range of perspectives-including financial regulatory systems-it has also conducted research on the application of a new method, called the business accounting model, on the economies of Japan and other Asian countries, as well as research on the empirical analysis of Japanese-style employment using micro data.
Furthermore, with the cooperation of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and many researchers in the field, ESRI has continued to hold international conferences since 2001. This conference looked to explore and further deepen the discussions of the current research undertaken by ESRI.
